There are few affordable climate measures available. The standardization and subsequent introduction of high octane fuels present a cost-effective climate solution for road transport. While electrification is progressing, oil still needs to be replaced in the existing and upcoming vehicle fleets. Modern internal combustion engines require increasingly higher-octane fuels as new designs improve engine efficiency. The efficiency gains from increased octane levels are well-documented. Higher ethanol blend fuels, such as E20 (20% ethanol blended in petrol) or E30, have higher octane levels, which can enhance overall engine efficiency.
